      Cooking club

      @Teeny @Momogari

      Let's start this!

The final pics and the final comments should be in our journals, but we can choose and discuss the recipe here and share our experiences when preparing it.

Let's decide about the recipe for the next week. Should we start with something Japanese, because we are weebs, or maybe you have another idea?

      Re: Cooking club

Japanese ingredients will be hard to get here. It'd be better if I stopped by asian markets sometime to see what I can get and report back before we try anything japanese.

I had a simple fish meal in mind for this weekend but it's not anything a cooking club should bother with. I'm open to ideas.

Let's see what ingredients you can get relatively easily, so we can decide.

Do you have any ethnic shops nearby, or it's limited to US food? Any farmer's markets?

      Re: Cooking club

I'm probably fairly limited to US ingredients here. There are a couple 'asian markets' but those aren't guaranteed to be useful in this part of the country. I can order some stuff online though.

There are plenty of farmers markets here. Actually there's basically permanent farmers markets in lots of towns here.

Any ethnic food around? Jewish maybe at least? Anything like an ethnic shelf in a supermarket?

Or maybe there is some US food specific to the region you live in?

      Re: Cooking club

Well there's small sections of shelves for various different cultures in the grocery store, jewish included, but those never seem to have what you need when you're cooking.

as long as the ingredients aren't too esoteric I think it'd be fine though.

Let's start with something simple, relatable, yet surprising maybe?

What do you think about a burger made of black lentils with dried plums? I can translate the recipe in a minute, if you like the idea.

      Re: Cooking club

I guess I don't know what would go with it. In the US there is such a thing as a 'normal' burger, and it's rather...normal. If I'm making anything out of lentils and dried plums having something normal sounds rather bland.

What are some ingredients of the "normal" burger?

      cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup.

I'm not keen on making a veggie burger otherwise normal.

pickled red onion sounds intriguing. I wonder where I can get some here. Or how long it takes to pickle

      Re: Cooking club

OK, let's not do the normal one.

What about not eating the burger with a bun etc. at all.

Let's eat it separately together with rice with some spices (I have some recipes) and a salad.

Lentils + rice is a good combination.

      What do you think?
