The City State Ruder stood a few days north of Solty Rei a large port city. While Ruder was not as large as Solty Rei it was still a well-known city and a major trade hub since it was close by to Solty Rei. The farmlands around it were lush and Ruder was Solty Rei's primary trade for produce products. Solty Rei boarding the sea directly had plenty of fish but not a lot of vegetables and other livestock available for their citizens. Ruder wasn't the only city with livestock and produce available for trade to Solty Rei but it was the closest so it has prospered greatly.
However, Ruder has now become a footnote of history on one single disastrous day. Few survived the tragedy and most fleed to the nearby city Solty Rei which was the closest city with a standing military. Ruder, of course, had a standing military as well and while it wasn't known for its military might Ruder's soldiers and mages were well trained and ready for combat. But they weren't prepared for the power of the ancient Rune Magic of legend.
Shatcha scowled once again at his master's task. Why with these powers should he stop at attacking just one city? Shatcha was quite confident he could destroy this city and many others. Though Shatcha knew he could not defy his master's orders. Since he knew the city of Ruder presented no threat toward him he did not even bother to hide his approach.
"Captain," the lookout paused confused a bit since it was but a lone goblin. It seems it was some kind of trick, though goblins weren't that tactically minded, were they?
"On with it, I don't have all day soldier," the watch captain barked. The soldier jumped that had called to him.
"Sir, its a lone goblin approaching the city, I don't see any others with him," the soldier replied
"You must be mistaken, goblins aren't that brave. They are coward by nature. Even if it as lone goblin there is no point in sending soldiers to deal with it, just shoot it dead with an arrow," the Captain remarked and ordered.
The soldier nodded and headed to an Archer stationed on the city's walls and pointed out the goblin. The Archer nodded and took out his longbow. He readied it by pulling it back with a notched arrow, and carefully aimed his shot and adjusted for the distance. He let loose the arrow which soared through the sky toward its kill. The arrow veered off to the side of the goblin as it approached it and missed. The Archer hadn't expected that to occur, but did not panic and quickly shot another. The arrow again veered off its target and struck the ground near the goblin who kept on walking toward them with no fear.
The Captain was watching as the Archer loosed his shot not once but twice and somehow missed. Strange, the Captain thought, perhaps this was not a typical goblin. He had heard there were more powerful goblins from time to time, perhaps this was one of them. A volley should suffice, however. Even more powerful goblins were still weak monsters compared to others. He barked his order to have several Archers ready their bows and shower the goblin with arrows.
Multiple arrows soar through the air creating a lethal rainstorm and to most creatures it would have been. Shatcha just looked at them with annoyance. He knew he couldn't bring his power to its full strength for long, so he needed to conserve his strength until he got closer to the city. Arrows weren't threatening at all to him now. He let his power swarm around him, and it forced the arrows to turn away from him. Even if they had been shot point blank at him his powers would have turned them to the side. The delay though worked to his advantage since it had given him more time to approach the city. He was sure his power at its full strength would hold out long enough to destroy this hateful city-state.
Yet again the arrows all missed despite the fact 20 had flown true towards their shared target. The Captain surmised arrows simply would not work against this foe. He sounded the alarm. Troops and mages responded readying themselves for an attack. Citizens retreated into their homes if they were near or into the nearby buildings. That's when Sergeant Garth Wesly a seasoned soldier first responded to the threat of the City State Ruder.
Garth not knowing what was going on reported to the front gates where his squadron would gather to advance. A messenger should arrive there promptly to inform them of the situation. Garth never made it to the gate before it exploded. He witnessed splinters of would flying pass him from an impossible distance, his instincts drove his reactions and placed his shield solidly in front of him. The debris killed and injured most nearby soldiers. They weren't ready for it, nor was he. It was unexpected, his countless battles experiences had saved him.
Garth shouted out a rally to gather soldiers to his position. He knew the city's gate had been breached and it was up to him and his fellow soldiers to stop the enemy here and now.
The soldiers that could, gathered up in a formation with the Seargent readying themselves for the battle to come. No such battle immediately occurred. Garth and those who had temporarily formed a squadron with him waited for the dust to settle. No enemy was there.
Shatcha decided he was finally within reach and launched himself at super-sonic speed. The waves tore through the gates and the buildings ahead. The goblin zipped and back forth, with super-sonic flight, tearing most of the city to sunder. However, his great sonic power was short lived. Such intense power could not last and it wore him out, but in a few days he'd recover completely. Exhausted from his powers he looked down upon the destroyed city. It was hardly recognizable as it mostly debris now. He was sure many had died. Now that the soldiers could see him hovering in the air he figured it was time to deliver his message from his master.
"My master sends his greetings, those who survived today should cherish it while they can. Soon all of you will die by my hand. You have but witnessed a fraction of my strength." Finished with delivering his master's message Satcha turned and flew away at a much slower pace, only about 100 miles per hour and only for about ten minutes, as it was all he could manage. He landed, not as gracefully as he wanted. If he hadn't of used his power at its full strength he could have flown for quite some time. However, he was far enough away he knew he'd be safe. Now it was time to head back to camp, it was near.
Garth had survived that day, but his home was gone. There were more survivors then he had expected, but many were crushed or trapped under collapsed buildings. Garth with others headed to Solty Rei a City-State one that boasted a mightier military then theirs perhaps even the strongest in the south. Garth like others didn't have much to report on the goblins abilities only that it was highly destructive and leveled the entire city within minutes.
The four Guild leaders of the Solty Rei gathered together at the call of its King by the request of his Knight Commander. Solty Rei was divided into four guilds which ruled beside its King, nearly as equals.
The Mage Guild was known throughout many cities as one of best places to learn mystic arts as its mages were renowned and quite skilled.
The Warrior Guild was no less impressive and had turned out the most skilled soldiers, knights, and archers.
The Shadow Guild while it still maintained influence did not turn out reputable Assassins, Thiefs, and Rangers. Those it trained were skilled but it was certainly not the first choice of many, most were locals.
The Guard's Guild was simply Solty Rei's standing military which was a mix of classes of various skills. Solty Rei's army was known to be one of the mightier standing armies in the South. The Guard Guild frequently hired members of each of the other Guilds for various jobs at the Palace's expense.
The gathered Guild leaders and the King agreed, that the goblin was real and true threat to civilized cities. The King called forth any and all willing adventures to come to city and gather in his hall to hunt down the goblin who had destroyed the City State Ruder. The King promised a handsome award for completing the quest.
In a week many gathered and found the fame Knight Commander Lucile Kinder who headed the Guard Guild as its master there to greet them, and not the King himself. However, Kinder had the authority by her King and the other Guilds to handle the quest and award.
Begrudgingly a small figure made his way to the hall where the adventures would gather. The person’s head was would reach waist height of an average human. This meant he was too small to be a dwarf, and definitely not wide enough. Its shoulders were tucked in, almost as if they were designed to hide his neck. If it wasn’t for the large nose on the creature one could have mistaken him for some sort of goblin or other small monster. Not that his posture was any less menacing.
Its shoulders where slouched, its nose pointed toward the floor, and its feet seemed more reluctant to move forward after each step they took. Although somehow they maintained a consistent pace, even though they seemingly were getting heavier. It was often difficult to detect the mood of gnome based of their gait and body language, but this one seemed to be putting his frustrations on display as it made its way into the hall.
The servants of the room stopped as he entered, each one’s face echoed the same confused expression. Their dazed looks seemed to give away their inner thoughts about why a fragile looking creature was here. The creature was used to the looks of pity and misunderstanding, but this did not mean it did not tire of them. It looked up for a moment to survey the room for the registry. Obviously none here were going to lead him to it. He reached into his pouch, where his hand rustled around for a few moments. When it emerged a small polished rock came forth. He threw it towards the table where the adventures registry resided and a moment later, he was there. Gasp came from the room as they were no longer frozen. The servants quickly scurried about as they had misjudged this gnome. Obviously it knew some sort of sorcery and they did not want to cross its path.

It had been such a long time since her sister and herself had been together. Today was going to be quite the day. Poly dressed in her holy robes and holding the staff she had crafted herself all those years ago. Now she was an adult. Poly stood at a good 6ft tall and not a smidgen more. She assumed her sister would be just as tall. Her long black hair reached the lower end of her back. It flowed wildly as she walked her slow, but methodical pace. Her facial features were soft, but held a unique sharpness that showed her birthright. They had been born to a noble elven family. It was how her sister and her were able to become such high ranked magi. Poly had been talking to adventurers and just happened to see her sister running right to her.
"POLY!!! POLY I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!" Hymnia said. The silver haired girl said. She too held the same facial features, however she was just an inch shorter. Poly excused herself and turned to embrace Hymn. "We have so much to catch up on, I can't believe it's been twenty years!" Hymn hugs Poly again. Hymnia's hair sat just below her upper back. Shorter, but it was also wild. Even a few different colors were running through it. "Well are you ready?!" Hymn said excited.
Hymns voice was sweet and high pitched, but Poly's, "Yes, dear sister. I am ready to aid you and whomever else who needs my aid." Her voice was like smooth caramel. "However, why are you in such.... Vulgar clothing?" Hymn was wearing a black, white, purple, blue, green, and red dress. It represented each element she had been studying and mastered. Upon telling her this, Poly nods and they go to attend the gathering. No need to be signed up, they were well known enough in their respective masteries.

A big thanks to @xWickedNekox for this amazing set
Kurt disliked meetings, he disliked being summoned and he disliked the fact he had been escorted to the meeting by several armed knights. They gave him the same looks of disgust you would give a rabid dog. Kurt didn't care, he did what needed to be done.
The grand hall was vast and filled with servants and other people, he kept his hood over his head leaning against the wall as his escorts left the hall. But at least the knights had promised wealth and what ever he desired. An audience with the King or Knight Commander would be a start, he could decide how he would deal with them then.
He played with the end of the cloak in his hand, it subtlety shifted in colour starting to blend in to it's background. The gnome and the elves seemingly weren't part of the staff and he began to study them. He didn't like working with others. Gesturing to a servant girl for a drink, he noticed she recoiled slightly when she saw his face and the scars that covered it.
Kurt smiled and waited for the illustrious Knight Commander to appear, she obviously knew he was a wanted dead or alive or a dozen city states, why he was here at all would be interesting.
"Knight Commander, four adventurers have arrived. It doesn't appear as if any others are coming." The commander nodded, her King would be disappointed, but Lucile Kinder was not surprised. It was possible more would arrive given a few days. However, Kinder doubted it would be many. A rumor of a monster that destroyed a well-armed City-State and one passed by many only gained weight with the King's announced quest. Wealth was nothing to a dead man.
"Commander, I think you should be aware of something. One of the Knights believe one of them is a wanted man by the name of "Knight Commander, four adventurers have arrived.
One of the Knights believes one of them is a wanted man by the name of Kurt Lorgan. He's wante..." the Knight Captain stopped at Lucile's raised hand.
" I know who he is and he has not broken any laws here if that is indeed him. As it stands there is no proof." Lucile noted her Captain was about to protest but he saw her intense stern blue eyes and knew she fully intended to ignore the fact and expected all of her command to do so as well. Instead, the Knight Captain nodded.
"Understood. Two of them are female elven wizards of noble birth and sisters, Poly and Hymna." This time her Captain expected her to know whom these two were and Lucile did. Her Captain moved on to the last. "The last one, and first to arrive is a mystery, I don't know who he is, he's scrawny for a Gnome and seemed at first better suited in a potion shop. Though he's a crafty one. The gnome somehow teleported itself or appeared to at least across the room. All capable then Lucile, mused.
"Very well Captain, I'll meet our guests." The Captain nodded as he watched his gallant Knight Commander pass him as he remained kneeling. She was a mature woman still in her prime and he like the others under her command held her in high regard. She always kept herself tidy, and few knew her hair was a long blonde because it was tied in a bun and kept under her polished helm. Her face was visible, but it was normal for her to wear a polished full plate armor with the Emblem of Solty Rei on it, the emblem had a glowing book on its left with a knight's helm on the top, with a shield on the left, and a pair of eyes adorning its bottom with a gold key centered. The idea of the emblem was a symbol of a city that used guilds to run it and so Solty Rei did exactly that. On his Knight's Commander's back stood the Helm the symbol of the Knights.
Lucile walked down the grand stairs into the hall the adventures had been brought to wait for an audience.
"Greetings, thanks for coming. I'll get straight to the point. This is quest simply to hunt down a goblin that you'll be paid handsomely to do. His Majesty will even hire one guild member of a guild of your choice from our city if your party desires it to complete your quest with you." She stopped looking at the group, it seemed they were split into three groups right now. The gnome and the hooded man stood in groups of their own, while the sisters formed their own. She raised her hands to gesture at the others. "Please consult the others gathered here to decide how your party will proceed. If you have any further questions please ask me, and please report your quest progress to me. I'll handle your award for completing the quest as well." Lucile then stopped to wait for the gathered adventures responses.
Poly and Hymnia looked at each other. Poly spoke first, "In all due respect, Knight Commander. If this is one Goblin, it shouldn't need a group of adventurers... Unless there is something we need to know?" Poly said this very politely and she even curtseyed at the end. She looks at Lucile and then to Hymn and nods. "So you say one person from a singular guild of our choice?"
Hymnia moved to the other two, "Ummm... Hi! My name is Hymnia and the pretty one over there is Poly. We're sister's... Who might you all be?" She asked in a polite tone as well. She too curtseyed. "I suggest we have someone who can take the frontline... Poly or I can buff him or her... What do you think?" She looks inquisitively at them both. She was nervous unlike her sister. Hymn wasn't exactly a social butterfly, she was more into soloing things and not getting killed.
"This isn't a game of chess lady." the gnome said. His tone was soft and it carried no hidden weight behind his words. He had nodded towards them when he greeted but he had not introduced himself. His named carried a lot of renown in many different circles. He had done some work for pretty much each of the guilds in Solty Rei, but none of it was heroic or legendary status. He was more like the guy that everyone knew that could complete a task or job in unconventional ways. This would be the first quest or mission he joined that had an urgent status.
“I would rather not trade my name. Its in the book for all the scribes and policy makers, so if you really must know you can go look. “He said as he motioned toward the table with the registry. He quickly drew into a salute to the knight captain.
“I would much more like to name a reward then get gold. Some of us value things greater than gold. Gold can only buy so many things sir. Somethings have to be traded. So here is what I purpose. If I am helpful in the successful extermination of this goblin, a want a writ of credit. An official document with the kings seal stating that the kingdom is in my debt until the kingdom has provided enough good will or value to counteract the debt I paid to them. “ the gnome said. He nodded toward the knight commander and then nodded to his captain eagerly awaiting their response.
Kurt listened and was reminded why he didn't play well with others, the gnome seemed fair enough and the elves, well they were elves. He shuffled his feet and adjusted his stance, deciding blunt and direct was a good an approach as any.
"Just point me in the direction of the goblin, he'll be dead soon enough" Kurt had killed enough goblins to consider himself a expert "but what I would love to know is why you just haven't sent some of your lackeys to do it Knight Commander....." He let the question trail off.
Kurt shuffled his cloak and legs again, from the look on some of the Knights faces they didn't appreciate the way he addressed the illustrious Knight Commander or the fact he called them lackeys. Oh they had to know of his reputation, he'd killed a few knights in his time to.
"Anyway you have my help for now at least" he shot the Knight Commander a wink, not knowing if such casual disrespect would annoy her or not. In truth he didn't really care.
Vermin was vermin after all, goblin or not.
The Knight Commander nodded to what Poly asked, and observed that Hymnia went over to the others and asked about who to hire from the guild and suggested a frontline combatant. Lucile did not want to interrupt the conversation so she decided to wait a moment before answering Poly.
The gnome made his own remarks and continued to state his name was in the books and he wanted more than gold, a writ of debt from the King. Her Captain didn't seem to know how to respond, she could see he was a lost for words. Though he did seem angry at the symbolist's demand.
The lone scarred man, Kurt, spoke up next stating the job would be a breeze and why her lackeys could not deal a swift blow instead. Her Captain and other knights took offense it seemed from being called lackeys or was the man's tone of disrespect? After which he confirmed he would complete the quest and winked at her casually. Her Knight Captain was ready to ignore the gnome all together now and was heading toward Kurt. However, Lucile spoke to addressed the adventurers concerns and questions.
"Your questions are fair. First off your compensation will be gold and nothing more unless the rumors of the goblin being more than goblin end up being true. Bring proof of that, and I may give you a bonus for completing the quest.
Second, his majesty wishes to keep his city's defenses strong in case the rumors are true. The guilds, however, believe its a ruse to lure out our soldiers to leave our city defenseless for some reason. What reason that is, we don't know. The shadow guild is looking further into the event surrounding the goblin to find more truths about it.
So, yes, it's likely one of you could easily accomplish this quest as the chances of the rumor of a goblin single-handedly destroying a major city-state of any size is basically zero. But the King has decided this is important and if does turn out to be nothing you will all still be paid well for completing this quest in gold coins."
Poly looked in puzzlement. Even though she was surprised to hear that a single goblin had destroyed an entire city, she herself had never even heard of the incident. "That is very troubling indeed.... However if I may ask that my payment go to the people that lost their family and homes." She curtseys to the Knight Commander. Hearing what the others had to say, she stares at the gnome. "My.... Such a temper."
Hymn looked on at the gnome. "I was just giving a suggestion, sheesh cool your head." Hymn however had indeed heard of the devastation that had happened to the city. She wasn't one to back down from a challenge, but she also didn't want to worry her sister. "So.... Any other suggestions on whom we should bring people?"
Poly goes into a deep thought.... "Is there any one fighter type that has an advantage against the elements?" She asks as she looks up. "In a book I read many years ago, I read of a lost knight class. I believe the name was.... Ahh it escapes me..." She looks down continuing to think. Despite what everyone thought, right now someone to take blows was desperately needed.
The Knight Commander listened to the discussion and decided to offer some advice.
"If you are looking for a lone fighter to take the front I suggest the warrior's guild. My Knights are use to fighting in formation, few have experience fighting solo on the frontline. As for magic, it seems you have plenty of those who practice magic in this group, though there is nothing wrong with boosting your group's magic ability, depending on what you expect it may be for the best. The Shadow guild on the other-hand is the best at gathering information, which may be exactly what your group needs to succeed in this quest.
The other Guild leaders as well as myself will provide you with a quality member of our Guild to travel with you on your quest. "
I have a Knight ready to go with you, he's skill is with mobile combat on his horse."
Kurt listened to the conversation and the latest intervention by the Knight Commander, he was unsure over the best course of action. A Knight would to a degree be useful, certainly able to take a beating. But it was a Knight, a arrogant most likely high born idiot, filled officially with ideas about honour and glory.
He questioned if he could go longer than a week without pushing him off his horse. As for the Shadow Guild he distrusted them for an entirely different set of reasons.
He mused for a second rubbing his scar "I'll take the Knight, as long as he actually knows how to fight and isn't a show pony". He was sticking with blunt and direct.
"But I'm happy to hear if anyone has a better idea?"
In truth Kurt wanted to get going already, something about this place was putting him on edge.
This thing about a group of mixed adventures is that even if you spell out your intentions, try to be nice or least try to not be rude, there is always someone that takes your actions offensively. Uniet had been on quest or jobs that had mixed parties and the clash of personalities often lead to non-optimal success rates. People always had their bias or the hindrance of their social status to consider. Not to mention the racial tensions that could spring forth. Gnomes were the easiest to work with. Most of them operated on logic, although they were not without their faults. They were often stubborn and couldn’t see others emotional point of view.
“I don’t see the problem with a writ of credit sir. It would be more favorable for the kingdom. As could only use the writ for payment from the kingdom and the city is not out any monetary value. It could be used for something as simple as an audience with a city official, or lodging in a guest house at the palace. That and the value of the writ is also determined by my actions in the job instead of a set value from the coffers. It’s a much wiser decision, perhaps you would pass the deal to person who actually manages policy instead of military? No offense sir.” The gnome said. He bowed his head low, as low as a gnome could without seeming to beg.
“If this is an unreasonable request then I would need the specifics of the gold and the bonus you speak of. I would need a detailed contract comprised before I could proce…” the elf spoke up declaring her charity. It was an honorable thing, but anyone who could have survived such an attack would be traumatized or already taken care of. This wizards inexperience dealing with anything outside of her studies was becoming more apparent the more she opened her mouth.
“I meant no disrespect, but we can do all the planning in the world and it won’t help. I mean what do you think few contractors can do when, if the rumors are true, this creature took down an entire city state with an active military? And if the rumors are false and it wasn’t a goblin, something did take down the city. Wouldn’t it be better to come up with a plan and strategy before we start asking for resources?” he looked to squirmy one as he spoke of this. Surely there was another person here who had some concept of what they were being asked to do.
“I recommend we create a plan that involves first, trying to determine what caused the calamity. Second we take that information to determine how we are going to approach the calamity, and third we come up with a plan to dispel the calamity. It should happen in waves, and each time we should report back to the kingdom to see if our services are further needed.” This time he drew his gaze drew to the knight captain. This would be a test to see if the knight captain was truly in charge of the mission or if some imperial delegate had to be contacted to approve things.
Lucile noted that the Gnome asked again for a writ and pointed out to the others that actions needed to be taken in waves of strategy instead of being planned all ahead of time.
"The award is unnegotiable, unfortunately. Further, if you want to donate your portion, the church of Axses has done more to provide for the survivors than any other. Naturally, other churches assisted as well. However, there isn't an overall fund to donate too, so I'll leave which church you wish to donate to aid them in your hands."
"The gold award is 200 each." (200 gold is enough to buy 1 sword that's masterwork quality, or a good set of armor, but not of masterwork quality. For the average worker its 2 years wage.)
"As for what you need to accomplish for this quest. Acquiring information will be of the most value. So feel free to deter from the official quest if you discover valuable information about the attack and destruction of the city.
On that note, each guild master has their own opinion on what happened and how the quest should be accomplished. Because of that, the King outlined the terms of the quest himself. Since that is the case, the award cannot be altered but by the King himself, which is not going to happen.
Since each Guild Master has different opinions on what the quest should accomplish, despite the official request, accomplishing any of them will suffice. Since that is the case you may ask each of the Guild Masters what their opinion is on the quest. If you want mine, here is not the place for it." She left if it open, and many of her Knights glanced at her with her last statement wondering why their commander stated she wouldn't give her opinion here. The Knight Captain could think of many possibilities, was it a spy, was it something in contrast to her fellow knights, and so on?
Ruby knew she was late. The reason being she was helping some lost travelers. She hoped that her kindness to them didnt cost her place in the journey ahead. She also didn't like that she was summoned but she knew it was part of her duty to appear when summoned. That was one rule that the Ranger who raised her told her that she had to keep no matter what.
She arrived to her destination hoping that she would be let in and that she would be able to take part. She announced who she was to the guards and hoped that they would lead her to where she was suppose to go.
