Hmm, depending on the fabric you are using, you could use fabric paint or even sharpies. Just make sure to do the pattern before stitching it to the base fabric...cos if you make a mistake, removing the fabric is such a pain!

I have never tried sewing lycra. However, stretchy material is very difficult to sew on. Assuming you are using a machine, you need special needles for stretch fabrics.
