Okay, have done a load of updates. Jimmeh will be putting up the Manchester meet signup tomorrow which will take place March 14. I've just kicked up the Pre-Alcon meetup topic which will take place in Leicester on April 4-5.

Might be tricky but could it be possible to do small 1 day mini con-like events? A bit like some anime clubs do to help get money together for the club. Have a few dealers, a very low ticket price and maybe some anime screening. I dunno might be bit hard to do but thought about it a while back. I did some in the past and they went well. Thought I'd suggest it though as a way of helping AnimeLeague and Alcon.

I was considering at doing something similar to the ReCons at one point last year, but I mainly want to try and build up a stronger country-wide infrastructure of organisers before attempting that. The alternative idea I had was to hire out a bar and run an event in it (LAC-style) - London being a prime candidate for this, since LAC no longer runs and I note that a proper replacement has not yet sprung up.

<_< I kinda did a few things a while back. I can talk you through the things I did in Brum before if you are interested. I wanted to try London a few times but found costs too great so I stuck to Birmingham and Wolverhampton. I did sci-fi last time and got more people than I thought I would. It was amazing to see so many fans and being able to start something new and different.

Suggestion:

In the future (I'm not sure there are enough A.L.-ers in Wales to do this maybe, but) it would be cool if there were a meetup in Cardiff or somewhere South Wales, sometime.
Not saying it would have to be this year, since everything looks setup already, though.

I'd like to put forward a suggestion of doing a meetup in cambridge, for the simple reason i live in cambridge hehe please

spoke with free about it before but sticking it here as a reminder -

prehaps next year around juneish we could organise a group of ALers (to leave from an english airport) to go over to america for a week during which we'd meet american ALers and attend a huge american con at some point ? i think it'd be great for the community and we'd get our moneys worth since we'd be there a week and also experience what a huge american convention is like

That is kinda what ALWorld was about but ALWorld they got made into ALcon. Reason it never happened was due to cost issues for some members. It is possible with good organising to get good ticket prices but it'll mean being able to get the money upfront from people to get a good group price.

~ i dunno i recon it could be done and getting the money from people upfront would be an advantage as they'd deffinately then commit since they'd have already paid so we wouldnt have loads of people bailing out at the last minute

I wonder if it's worth reviving my AnimeLeague in Japan idea for 2011...

I remember trying to get that organised back in 2005. I still keep in contact with the hotel. It's very much a good idea, though you need to try and get enough people together and get the money upfront too.

I was thinking of going through one of the 'tours' that someone like the Japan Travel Centre organises, where you basically get a hotel and flights and you're free to do what you choose (example here. If everybody books onto the same tour at the same time, then we'll all end up together - of course, you'd have to make sure of this first.
