Sunday Gamers Day - "Free For All!" - Blazblue x MvC3 x SFxT

Free For All (SFxT, UMvC3, BB)

As part of Gamer's Day, AnimeLeague will be hosting Winner Takes All on Sunday 10th February. Signups will occur in the back room from opening until 1pm. We will be hosting, Street Fighter X Tekken, Ultimate Marvel v Capcom 3, Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend and Super Street Fighter IV 2013: Arcade. The tournaments will be FREE to enter (provided you've paid to enter the event as a normal attendee for the Sunday do so now HERE), with 150 in the prize-pot (and hopefully further donations from sponsoring companies). There will be a prize pot of 150 and this cash is split as prize-money between these tournaments.

We shall also be running a number of casual tournaments with smaller 10 cash-prizes.

      Date: Sunday 10th February 2013
Tournament Registration Time: 11am to 1pm
Finishing Time: The area will be closing at 8pm, or as close to as possible.

      Venue:
The Rocket Complex, 166 Holloway Road, London N7 8DB
      Directions and further information:

More details on entry fees into London Anime Con can be found at: http://www.londonanimecon.com

      Rules:

      You must bring:
Your own XBox 360 stick or controller. We will have our own, but there is a limited amount so this is not guaranteed. We will provide PS3 to Xbox 360 stick converters if required.

Tournament format is Groups into Single Elimination. The top two from each group qualify for Single Elimination knockout. Within a set, you can only change your character if you lose (Not win). Other than that, there is no character lock. Pausing the game forfeits one round, so it is highly recommended that you check your configuration and vibration settings before the match begins, then restart.

You will not be allowed to play any matches without a Plug-And-Play kit and you must turn off the controller after each match. The judges next to the machines will also help ensure that these two rules are followed. If you see anyone breaking any rules, please inform a judge/staff member immediately (If it is within your match, do not continue/finish the match.)

If there are any concerns or questions, please let me know as soon as possible. I will also be allowing internet sign-ups, but failure to be on time for your match will give you a loss.

      Signing Up:
Sign Ups will be allowed both on the day and here, on the forums. Please note that if you sign up on the forums, you will need to register and let us know on the day that you are actually there. If you do not, then you will lose your place.

Information that we will require is as follows:

Will Street Fighter x Tekken be played under the new version 2013 patch (that's out tomorrow)?

If it is downloadable, then I will make sure that it will be there.

well it's a free patch so if you can, please do download it so the game feels more balanced and people can't abuse those infinites from the initial version. Also will all characters be available (including the DLC ones)?

Any idea on how good the 360 to ps3 converters are (i.e. any sort of lag etc.)? If worst comes to worst, I'll see if I can borrow a 360 controller from a friend. Also, I might be signing up for SFxT.

After speaking to various communities about this event including some from SFxT, Tekken and especially Blazblue this is event was sub par to the hype that was created. The things that went wrong:

      - The lack of set ups for each game especially providing how busy it was.
      - Relying on competitors bringing their version of the game for an extra set up.
      - No structure to the tournament format. I personally had to step in and show people how to draw simple brackets.
      - Lack of DLC for SFxT
      - No timetable to what was going on
      - Seems that there was no planning prior to the event to what was happening.
      - Wording on the prizes

To be honest, the fighting game players were skeptical going to this after what happened with SC5 and BB last year when AL ran their own tournaments but now it's kind of set in that it's not likely to be interest if it were to happen again. It was tough to see the state things were kinda in when I got there and after speaking to various people who helped get thing back on their feet (Gary, Kevin who worked on the Zen United Stand and a couple other people who helped in the brackets) that it could have been a lot better with any sort of planing was involved. If AL plan on doing this again under their own jurisdiction, then a major overhaul to how their system with VG tournaments when attraction a lot of people need to be reworked. I heard a lot of stuff on the day, but the one thing I didn't hear was anything on pre planning which seems to be the case every time.

Thank you for that input. We're already aware of several of these issues. I have a reasonably lengthy response which I am typing up that will cover the problems we encountered and the changes that shall be made going forward.

Re: Sunday Gamers Day - "Free For All!" - Blazblue x MvC3 x SFxT

We understand that a lot of people were dissatisified with how this tournament was planned and run. The truth of the matter is that we were ourselves very unhappy with how it went. We would like to apologise and state that we are very sorry for this.

The situation beforehand was that we were due to have Neo Empire run this, as per usual. However, with two weeks to go they went uncontactable, leaving us in an extremely difficult situation whereby we had to decide whether to cancel running fighting gaming tournaments, source an alternate provider, or run it ourselves with minimal experience. With no alternate providers being contactable, we decided to take this on to ourselves to run.

Unfortunately, with just two weeks to go, and an entire event to focus on too, this meant that several mistakes and errors were made. These included -

      - Confusion over timetabling, with what was promoted beforehand and in the conbook being contrary to the timetabling that it was changed to on the day.
      - Communication with regard to prizes.
      - A lack of setups as we could not source enough with finances available (despite copies and setups being bought beforehand at some expense).
      - A lack of decent monitors as some had lag issues or were too small.
      - Despite DLC being sorted for all games beforehand, with usb sticks being acquired to put the content on every console, DLC was not available for SFxT.
      - A lack of briefing to the VG crew over bracketting and running of tournaments. There was an over reliance on a couple of ppl (ie: the head of VG and his deputy) to do this, and unfortunately he took extremely ill during the day due to a medical condition, resulting in confusion.
      - A lack of attention to systems being down and/or games being needed to be changed over due to an already overworked VG crew that were focusing on the tournaments.

Going forward we shall be running this in-house 100% in future and making the following changes -

      - Each tournament shall clearly state on promotional material what 1st, 2nd and 3rd place shall get for each game. All VG crew will be briefed with this knowledge to avoid confusion.
      - An expansion of setups, each high-cash prize tournament having a guaranteed four setups (ideally more) at all times.
      - All timings will be advertised clearly and correctly beforehand, with all VG crew briefed.
      - An investment in better monitors and a quality check on our current stock to ensure any monitors with lag issues are removed from our stock.
      - A check that all DLC is on the memory sticks for the consoles.
      - All VG crew being briefed on bracketting and running of high-cash prize tournaments. A document of each type of elimination to be created with examples so that even a new VG crew member can quickly be bought up to speed.
      - A rigerous plan in place for how each tournament will be run (ie: the type of elim and whether groups are to be done etc) and an agreement to stick to this plan with all VG crew being briefed of this plan.

Again, we would like to give our sincere apologies to anyone who had a poor experience. This was the first time we have run a series of tournaments in-house on this scale. Despite this and the other reasons it was not good enough and we are very sorry for that. We are learning and will have a LOT more time to get it right for next time. We are 100% determined and know that we can put on a great series of tournaments going forward and hope that the community understand the reasons for what transpired and will forgive moving forward. Thank you.

Any chance of different fighting games as well? MvC3 is cool but they're all in that category where if you don't regularly play them you're actually pretty fucked. Games like Dead or Alive, Tekken and especially Soul Calibur are fairly basic and don't expect you to spend several months mastering combos, making them much more friendly at all levels.
