      Sci-Fi Week || Thread III || A&M Troopers Picks

Welcome to Thread III of Sci-Fi Week: Anime & Manga Troopers Picks!! This is your lovely weeaboo Queen, Vivix, Overlord of the A&M section in AL, here to present to you what this thread is all about.

As the name indicates, for this Sci-Fi Week Thread III will be dedicated to the picks our fellow Troopers have chosen as their favorite among the genre. We've already had Thread I throwing in several random series, both old and new, that classify the sci-fi genre. Out of there, many of you can look at new series you may have never heard of. Now for this thread, the purpose is to let everyone know which sci-fi series does the mod team and assistants in the section like as their personal favorites, why do they like them and why do they think you might enjoy them as well.

Everyone is free to comment on our Trooper's picks, ask them questions pertaining to the series and whichever any is arsed to do. You can also list your own top 3 favorite picks for this genre. Open critique is always welcomed but we only ask that you refrain from being overly negative. We are aware that not every series can be loved by everyone.

So without further ado, here's the list the A&M Troopers have chosen:

      Vivix's Pick

Favorite(s) Sci-fi series (up to 3): Planetes, Cowboy Bebop and Steins;Gate
      How did you discovered them?:
Planetes: By an ALer here named Mors who constantly said how amazing it was.
      Bebop: Through Adult Swim.
Steins;Gate: By Ivan and speedlolita here.

Why do you like this series:
Planetes: It's not full of action as opposed to most sci-fi, but it has a very solid and futuristic storyline, it has good characters to compliment it. The development of the plot and the two main characters was very interesting, solid and dynamically done. I find it very underrated and one of the best sci-fi series I've ever seen.
Bebop: For me, Bebop is the epitome of what anime is. It's a classic that never gets old. Great story, solid characters, great animation, amazing music...it just has it all.
Steins;Gate: This is brilliant. I have no other words to describe it. It's an incredible series. It brings such an interesting concept and it's developed in such a creative way. It deals with the controversial theme as to just how much should human beings delve into desiring to change the past or the future. It's also ingenious how the series brings up actual events that have happened in earlier years regarding time traveling and brilliantly incorporated them in the story. Seriously, it's an amazing story.

Why do you think others might also enjoy it:
Planetes: The different outlook on the sci-fi genre and the way it's uniquely portrayed was refreshing. It's definitely an interesting story and really creates awareness on the different views people can have about the human race further reaching their limits (ie. just how far should humans go). Excellent series that should be more well-known.
Bebop: It's Bebop. It's a classic. It's all anime should be. It's the future with a love for jazz.
Steins;Gate: It's starts off slow and could be confusing, but after like episode 8 it just takes such a drastic turn that you simply have to keep watching. It's an ingenious story. You have chaotic action in the plot but also comedy thrown in along with bits of romance. It's well-balanced in that aspect and really does a great job in developing a unique story but also incorporating real life events.

      Shadow's Pick

Favorite(s) Sci-fi series (up to 3):Dragonauts: The Resonance (Only one my mind could recall as sci-fi).
How did you discovered them?: I was skimming google and was looking for Dragon based animes.
Why do you like this series: I like this series because of all the space travel and controversies it gives off within the series, plus the dragon designed machines. It is Mecha, Sci-Fi, Technology, Fantasy, Science, Space and Futuristic. It fits every category for Sci-Fi plus more.
Why do you think others might also enjoy it: There are a few who already said they don't like it, however this is a juvenile and playful teaser to what anime is capable of. It has some interesting scenes, challenging views and ideas, plus it is creative, even in it's simplicity.

      Kitty's Pick

Favorite(s) Sci-fi series (up to 3): Serial Experiments Lain, Akira, Cowboy Bebop
How did you discovered them?: By word of mouth at conventions mostly.
Why do you like this series: I like these series cause they have to be some of the best that I have seen. I'm not to big on the sci fi genre Ill be honest with that, but these three have made an impact on me to remember.
Why do you think others might also enjoy it: Well Akira and Cowboy bepbop are wildly common and popular. I love Lain as well for its complex and out there plot. They are all very worth a watch I would say.

      Raiji Magiwind's Pick

      B]Sousei no Aquarion (Aquarion)[/B]
--Other Titles to Series: Sousei no Aquarion OVA, Aquarion Movie: Ippatsu Gyakuten Hen; Current Sequel: Aquarion EVOL--
Why do you like it: I think the fact it mixes a few different elements together makes it interesting. You got a bit of sci-fi, a bit of romance (sometimes forbidden), a bit of Mecha, and definatly a bit of fanservice in a subtle context (sorry but the merge sequences are defiantly a little suggestive...XD)
How did you discover it: I stumbled on it looking for something new to watch at the local video store while perusing the anime section.
Why do you think others might enjoy it as well: I think others would enjoy the story, the odd romances, the crazy mythology, and get a good giggle out the 'orgasmic' undertones that merging to form Aquarion involves...yes I said orgasmic. The merges to form Aquarion involve this acid trip looking sequence with the characters sorta nudish like and usually saying things that you usually might associate with hentai...>>

      Generator Gawl
Why do you like it: I enjoyed it for the interesting story and at the time it came out, one of the few series to play with the biomech type of genre.
How did you discover it: Like Aquarion, another random find I found perusing the anime racks at the local video store.
Why do you think others might enjoy it as well: I think people will enjoy the action, the relationships of the characters and if anything, they might just enjoy Gawl's arrogant, cocky, sort of 'bite me' attitude. Meanwhile his antics on occasion are humorous, particularly dealing with girls...

Re: Sci-Fi Week || Thread III || A&M Troopers Picks

Favorite(s) Sci-fi series (up to 3): Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing

How did you discovered them?: all three through adult swim

Why do you like this series:
Outlaw Star: The ships, simply put they are some of the best looking things i have seen in an anime, i love the grapple arms and its just plain original.
Cowboy Bebop: The characters, Spike is by far one of my favorite characters of all time, he is witty funny and gets the job done even if he has to shoot or kick a few people to do it.
Gundam Wing: both the characters and the suits but more than that the whole story is on an epic scale. the colonies trying to tear away from the earth its the same as pretty much every Gundam series, but the fact that Hero almos kills himself saving the planet is one of the best endings to a series as far as im concerned.

Re: Sci-Fi Week || Thread III || A&M Troopers Picks

I must know. What is it that you like about Gundam Wing. (I love most things gundam but hate most things gundam wing) Have you seen other gundam series? Have you seen other mecha anime?
Gundam Wing.... I don't think that was ever part of the adult swim block. It was part of the toonami block for the longest though.

      My favorite sci-fi anime....
Blue Sub No.6 - I'm pretty sure I found out about this movie while at a friend's house when she was watching it. As an InuYasha fan I love that this movie is under 3 hours, and was at one point broken down into a 6 part mini series. Short = good. Without giving too much away, this title shows what happens when you have the knowledge and power to do something that you don't have to do. As a result of a single scientist the world is pretty much one giant ocean. It's hellaciously awesome. The creatures are interesting, and in some ways mirror actual advances in human technology and medicine (mermaid babies is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the hybrids)

There are other series I love a lot and I'll edit this post soon. Must get coffee.
