GENERAL DISCUSSION RULES AND GUIDELINES What is General Discussion GD is a section that allows for the community of AL to come together in a board range of topics from casual discussion topics to serious and heated debates and all that is in between along with community wide topics. As such GD staff encourages you to read the opening and most recent post in a topic so you can see the depth and nature of the topic Section Rules: 1: AL boardwide rules always apply 2: Respect: In General Discussion your opinions are on public display sometimes discussions may become heated, this does not mean you can insult the poster but may challenge in a considerate manner their opinion with your own thoughts and/or facts. The goal of discussion is not to be right but to reach a better understanding of the subject at hand and each other. 3: Don’t Necro Topics or Double Post: Don’t bump topics that have gone a month without a post or are beyond the first page or double post in a topic. Remake the topic in the case of Necro or use the edit button to avoid double post 4: Spam and Off Topic Posting: Spam is posts that do not add to the current topic or conversation at hand. A humorous comment, or off colored remark here and there (2-3 post in a row is the rule of thumb of GD staff) is fine but if it continues staff will encourage members to return to the topic and delete post if they feel that is needed 5: Flow Rule: GD allows for all ranges of discussion depending on the initial post of the topic creator please follow the flow of the opening post and topic, if the opening post is casual keep your post more casual and if the opening post is detailed and serious please follow suit with your own post. Debates Rules and guidelines: GD debates are participated in by AL members and sanctioned by GD staff. You’ll see a [Debate] tag before the topic and a post by the judges about what the topic the two teams will debate. These are detailed and heavy discussions which will always follow the below format Debates will always be announced, contact a GD staff member if you wish to form a debate, and tagged with two teams of even sides (at least two) and three judges Team A will make their opening statement of their stance on the issue of the debate followed by Team B. This will be followed by a support speech backing up that opening statement from Team A then Team B with a second support speech from Team A and Team B. The last part will be a rebuttal or counter speech in which the other team counters points raised by the other team Finally the judges will discussion and decide on a winner based on: Depth of the speeches and facts presented Examples of various formats and styles of topics in General Discussion Example A: Casual topic The idea is based on the GTK topics, but with a fresh-twist. In this topic, when you reply you tell us an interesting fact about yourself. It could be where you were born, how you joined AL, a story about your first-love and so forth. Opening simple statement that generates answers from people and occasional discussions of those facts people give Example B: General topic I want to preface this by saying I have never served in the military or have had a desire to. The US Government has banned the military policy of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" which banned homosexuals from openly serving in the military. How do you feel about it? Did you ever feel homosexuality would have a detriment on the coherency or stability of the military? Personally I always found the argument that it would somehow undermine the military ridiculous, a person's sexuality isn't going to affect how they serve with their "brother" in arms or the willingness to sacrifice their life for them. In fact historically you can see evidence to the contrary if you look at ancient empires and how their army was structured. I also feel glad that people can be who they are openly and still serve their country in the manner they see fit. This is an example of a general topic as it’s an easily discussable issue but goes well beyond merely casual chatter but is a bit more developed and will draw out more detailed discussion Example C: Serious Topic http://motherjones.com/mixed-media/2...et-suppression <- news article http://www.siliconrepublic.com/comms...otect-ip-will/ < news article http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:H.R.3261: < the bill http://boingboing.net/2011/07/29/hou...12-months.html < news story on internet info retention bill http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d112:h.r.1981: <- Data Retention bill http://ipmall.info/hosted_resources/...408_041222.pdf < Good resource of information on current internet laws The law calls for stricter punishments for internet piracy mostly but also attempts to protect copyright and intellectual property internationally. First off I think it’s high time the US Government realizes this is an expensive battle they are waging and like the war on drugs is ultimately futile. Internet piracy won't be stopped by stricter punishments and more constrictive language and we are in an age when the sharing of ideas and art are out there for most everyone. My fear is that, like many other internet goers, when coupled with the Protect IP ACT and the law allowing the government to collect data on internet users passed earlier this year that the US Government will become heavy handed in their approach to censorship, anti-piracy, and that the creative, free, and entrepreneurial aspect of the internet will suffer. This is a bit more serious because the opening post contains some research and the creator clearly read the links and went on a deeper search for info to impact their opinion on the issue Example D: Debate: Pending Mod Roles: Marona: Over all supervisor of GD, creates GTKs (wednesday/thursday depending), runs the Youtube channel, assist the frontpage, other task around AL Arya: Assistant recruitment for GD council, monitors assistant activity, pays credits for assistant duties and GTKs, Poll of the Week Toxifox: General section duties shared by all moderators.

Mandōnēs Vītae Mandōnēs Vītae (Mandates of Life) is a permanent event series in GD that focuses expanding oneself in various areas. Each challenge is personalized to the members who applied that month for a challenge, the challenges will seek to expand the personal self, your knowledge base, or you exposure to AL sections among other things. All you need to do to take part is fill out a basic initial questionnaire in this thread and take a picture of yourself with a sign on a piece paper "I am taking part in the Mandones Vitae", a moderator will read over it and give you a further interview creating an overall report that GD council will read over and make a challenge they feel is suitable for you. If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or, being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run - Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
This topic is for signing up for GTKs only. It is not a discussion topic, period

So is anyone even modding this section anymore? http://www.animeleague.net/forum/sho...7-Aesop-rock-s http://www.animeleague.net/forum/sho...some-questions http://www.animeleague.net/forum/sho...hould-I-hmmmmm I know that GD has gotten really, ultra, super, overly pedantic about the word "General," but aren't threads that are better suited to other sections still supposed to be moved? It would be beneficial for the OPs of the threads as well, keep in mind. I mean if you can't even find anyone to at least do janitor work anymore, why even bother?
I sent the last to over to Yami to have moved
