Testing out Auto-Updating Posts when viewing a topic

NOTE: We're unsure how this will affect server-load, so this feature may or may not stay depending on how the server handles it.

Very simple - When you're in a topic, if someone makes a new post then it will automatically update it for you. Note if you're inactive for five minutes or more then it will stop updating.

If this test is successful and server-loads remain reasonable then we hope to eventually add an auto-update ability to the entire site, including the forumdisplay itself (and not just when you are viewing inside a topic).

That would be awesome if server load remains low. It will save my f5 key at last

So, it would automatically update the threads if you're just looking at say, Ramblings? So they'd just be shuffling around constantly on busy days. I would find that to be more annoying than anything helpful.

Yeah, I'd really prefer it if things weren't constantly changing and shifting around when I'm just sitting on the index or a forum page. I can see it being useful in threads, but that's about it.

Also, is this something that is going to fuck over people with crappy internet connections?

If it does I am sure someone will report it to us in here.

Pretty sure that all it does is load new posts inside a thread while you're viewing the thread.

At this stage it's live only when you view a topic. We eventually want to move to everything on AL being live and updating without the need to refresh the page, or to at least have that as an option. However VB as software has not advanced that far yet (it's coming close tho).

Re: Testing out Auto-Updating Posts when viewing a topic

I agree that having an auto-update feature on the boards would make browsing more difficult, especially if you had quite a bit of backlog to get through and it was shifting around.
In topic it could be nice though.

Also nice would be to have boards update whenever the page is displayed, so that people using the back button to browse, for instance, wouldn't have to keep refreshing.

I don't think there exists any such hack, and if there were, I'm assuming it'd have to ask the server for an update every so often and not just stay open to traffic from the server constantly. I don't think a hack that makes threads constantly shift around would be a useful or published product.
