      Re: Death By Machines

Grant watched the small group make a break towards the cabin as he came to the lifeguard tower. Wasting no time he began to, one by one, jam the light white humanoid figures into the sand. After setting them up in a sort of gaggle formation he quickly reached into his pockets, revealing his flask of bourbon and lighter. Like something out of a circus performance, he drank and spewed the alcohol all over the base of the tower lighting it in the process with a flick of his zippo. The lifeguard seat and subsequently the tower itself began to engulf in flames. He wiped the smokey liquid from his smirking lips while simultaneously sliding the flask and lighter back into his pocket.

      "That oughta distract'em"

His smirk slowly bent into a concerned half-frown

"I hope they made it oka..."

Before he could whisper the ominous words, he was tackled by a renegade golf cart. As the cart started speeding back towards the store fronts with Grant still on the hood, he reached up and, holding on for dear life, snapped the steering wheel around to cause the cart to be tossed on its side sending him tumbling across the ground. As he pulled himself off of the enveloping sand he witnessed radios, tricycles, and hotdog stands start viciously attacking the decoy humans he had set up. Taking that as his queue he made a break for the cabin himself. As he passed by the tower he saw an ATV go careening into the wooden inferno. As the gas cap of the brutish vehicle began to melt, Grant wisely decided to pick up the pace. With the tower to his back he felt the sudden warmth and heard the aggressive fwoom of its gas tank exploding just as a toy gas-powered plane kamikaze dove into his left arm, destroying the plane, cutting his arm, and sending him, again, face first into the, now annoyingly familiar, sand. Grant stumbled to his feet and with the drive of needing to help protect the others he switched the axe to his left arm, grabbed his arm, and made a ferocious mad dash in the direction of the cabin, grunting under his breath.

      Re: Death By Machines

The feeling of being alone once again surfaced for a moment before Kyle joined her. Releasing the breath she didn’t even realize she was holding, Gabrielle nearly hugged him, but opted to keep her warm embrace to herself. Adjusting her position slightly so that she could run if necessary, the kiddo shook her head in indication that no, she didn’t need to be carried. She couldn’t help but giggle at his inclination that his reminded him of something like they would see on SyFy because it was so true. Craning her neck, as Beth appeared after having a brief fight with an old radio; Skye couldn’t help but giggle again. Ah, laughter in the middle of sorrow was always uplifting.

“Shouldn’t we wait for the other dude?”

Peeking over the dune, she looked for the man who probably saved their lives. What she saw instead was a huge fire and bellowing smoke, and she felt the pull to go poke at the flames. Fire always enthralled her, and her parents always caught her setting things on fire. The thought of her parents almost made her start tearing up again, but the sight of the nice man who gave her his hat being attacked by a golf cart. Adjusting the hat that somehow found its way on top of her head, she watched him closely as the flames from the tower exploded in a fiery blaze. Squeaking and ducking back down in case any shrapnel made its way to their location, Gabby popped back up in time to spot him dashing towards the cabin. Taking the queue, she once again took off, putting one hand on top of the hat to keep it from blowing away. Most of the machines in the vicinity were busy trying to figure out if anything was near the burning tower, which was a good thing.

      “Almost there…”

Tripping over a dead body, she face-planted in the sand with her head inches from a gaping stomach. Instincts took over and she screamed at the top of her lungs, scrambling back away from the corpse. Her body smacked into a mechanical dog and felt another scream making its way up through her throat, but she managed to squash it before it slipped through her tightly pressed lips. The dog clamped down on her left arm, digging its mechanical fangs into her flesh. Flailing her arms, she fought to get it off, but it only clamped its jaw tighter. The sound was undoubtedly going to bring more machines to her location, so she opted to take off running for the cabin, the dog gnawing on her arm the whole time.

      “Mrrrrr…!!!”

      Re: Death By Machines

Kyle saw the mechanical dog clamp onto Gabby, chasing after her. He caught up to her and used his tonfa to pry open the jaws. The machine was being stubborn, making the process more difficult than it needed to be. He growled softly as the jaws were very slowly pried off the girl's arm, throwing it into the water. It was then that as he turned to the girl to check on her that he was mauled by a fan, the blades trying to cut into him. He wrestled with the machine, grunting as the blades managed to cut his face. He grabbed the fan by the cord after managing to get away, spinning and launching the fan into the water. He ignored his own pain, using his gi pants to wrap up Gabby's arm. He then tended to Beth, seeing if she had any woulds. Both his tonfa were mangled, sighing as he left the splintered pieces of oak on the beach. As they passed a lifeguard tower, he found a small emergency hatchet. He grabbed it, as well as the first aid kit to better treat the wounds of the people in his group. There was no doubt the man was injured, as the plan was half baked at best. He made his way to the cabin, readying the hatchet as he opened the door. It was empty, just a small table and a few chairs inside. There was also an old fireplace, nothing modern, which was a good thing given the mechanical mayhem going on outside.

"Perfect, no modern luxury... A few rooms and some chairs... Now to wait for the others to come in..."

He didn't have to wait long for Gabby and Beth to enter, they were right behind him from the start after their encounters. Kyle had all but forgotten the wound on his face, setting up the first aid kit on the table and separating the contents. The last to enter was the man, holding his arm with the axe in it.

"Alright, now that we have time to catch our breath, who needs to have their wounds looked at first?"

      Re: Death By Machines

It was surreal. The sounds of clanging and crunching metal in a deathly melody with electrical charges played as the theme for the dying masses and charred buildings. Beth's head pounded with the sound of her heart and the crunch of tiny shells beneath her soles. She continued to run, fighting her own attackers as the girl was attacked by a robotic dog. The older girl managed to dodge a small army of ipods, cell phones, and kindles. Beating them away with her bare arms worked well enough until she tired, then an abandoned umbrella with a metal pole made a make-shift staff. The adrenaline and thoughts of survival fueled her until she reached the cabin with the others. Gabby was wounded and so was Kyle, she wondered instantly about the man who gave them distraction. A sort of guilt filled her, knowing the child was pained while she would have mere bruises.

The blonde watched Kyle a moment, tightening her cover-up and remembering she had been running around in her bikini. Yes, because that would stand up to an attack. It seemed like a silly thing to worry about her clothing while the world was ending.

"What do we do now?" she saked no one in particular. "We can't stay here long, they'll figure out we're here..."

      Re: Death By Machines

The distance to the cabin door felt many times longer than it actually was. Though his body must have been tired, his vision was still far more clear and wide, his nose was frantic with a stew of smells, he could feel every last grain of the wood of the axe and every fiber of his clothing, he could hear his new found companions talking in the, now not too distant, cabin, and he was still sprinting at full speed. He imagined the adrenaline must still be coursing through his veins. He paused for a moment, tourist shop clothing still sticking out of his side pockets and belt line, outside the door as he arrived in order to pick up a golf ball sized rock resting by the entrance. As he softly closed the opening behind him upon entering, a near calm fell over the room. The sounds of chaos were muffled from the thick pine door to the point where the danger felt worlds away.

      ”Everyone all right?”

He quickly noticed that everyone had some wound or another: Beth with blotches of reddening skin that would inevitably become bruises, Kyle with lacerations to the face that would likely become battle scars, and Gabrielle with multiple puncture wounds, lacerations, and possibly a facture to her arm. As he walked over to the displayed first aid kit he looked around more closely to see if anyone was dangerously wounded.

”Thanks Kyle. Anyone still bleedin badly?”

He placed the, up to this point useless, axe on the table and peeled away his hand from his wound ripping away what little blood that had coagulated. He reached into his back pocket for his flask and grabbed an eye pad from the medical palate. His flesh burned, skin to bone as he poured some bourbon on to the wound as a make shift antiseptic, afterwards quickly covering it with the pad. With vigilant focus in his eyes he grabbed a cravat bandage and tied it around the cut part of his arm. He then placed the rock on the spot of the wound and tied another cravat over that, forming a crude pressure bandage. Laying the clinging tourist shirts and swimming wear, from his adventures in the Carl Crab’s gift shop, on the table as he sat down, his highten senses started to wear off. Sighing slightly, he shrugged to the young ladies and Kyle, signaling that this was all the clothing he could grab for them. He heard Beth’s concern and saw the worry in Ms. Skye’s eyes.

”It is dangerous here, but we’ve gotta rest or we won’t have the energy to defend ourselves when we have to. We’ll see just how safe this place is soon enough. I think we’ll be fine for a while and neither myself nor Kyle here are gonna let anything get to you two before coming through us.”

He smiled to try and bring some levity to the situation and hopefully get a smile out of the ladies. He looked back to youngest of the crew and could partially see the pain she was trying to bravely hide.

”Can you move your arm young miss?”

He made it there in one piece and she couldn't believe it. That's not to say she wasn't pleased, after all, this guy had just pulled an amazing feat and was now right here with them again. She watched as he took care o his own wounds, feeling odd again or having mere bruises. While the men tended to Gabby, Beth took to ensuring that the cabin could be blacked out. They could not leave until everyone was capable so until then they would have to make due.

"Well, thanks...it would have been hard enough to get out o there without the distraction," the blonde said lightly as she placed a board over a small window. The idea that machines where running amuck was still sinking in and she still at a loss for real words. Sure she joked earlier but the gravity o the situation was sinking in and hitting her like a ton of bricks.

Kyle nodded to Grant, having forgotten about the bleeding gash on his face. He was in full survival mode and picked up a medium sized table and propped it against the door, noting there was a small hatch in the floor for an exit if need be. He began to help Beth cover up the windows, noticing her bruises. He plugged a window with an oversize stool, then went to the first aid bag. He got a first aid spray and walked back to Beth.

"This may sting a little... please don't scream...."

He sprayed her bruises, ensuring that they would heal faster and irritate her less. He made sure that she was not going to scream, ready to cover her mouth if she did. He then shifted his eyes back to Gabby, seeing Grant tending to her. Kyle picked up the small hatchet he found, sitting on the floor. He looked around them, a frown forming lightly.

"I know where we can get some weapons that won't try to kill us, but we need to wait for dark... then I can get us to my training hide away... it's about a two minute sail from here... that small rock island just to the West..."

      Re: Death By Machines

      ][OOC: Apologies for the delay. @Axion , @MidRamble , @PrincessLUV ][

Whining softly, she kept her pace up, stopping only when Kyle appeared by her side. He used his doohickey to get the dog’s teeth off her arm, and after he tossed it into the ocean, she felt a wealth of relief wash over her. That sensation dimmed as a fan came out of nowhere and attempted to make minced meat out of his face. Nearly screaming, the sound became lodged in her throat as he threw the fan into the ocean. Her eyes welled up with tears thanks to the pain, and she watched him wrap the pants that matched the top she was wearing around her injured arm. The clothing helped stop the bleeding, but it did nothing to help with the throbbing. Following behind Kyle as he grabbed an axe and first aid kit before heading towards the cabin, she was glad that they finally reached the building.

Dropping down onto one of the chairs, she sniffed a little in an attempt to keep from crying. No, she needed to be tough and strong because there was still a lot of danger and breaking down now wouldn’t do anyone any good. Her legs folded beneath her body in an attempt to get more comfortable in the chair. Beth made her way into the cabin, and Gabby couldn’t help but stare at the door, waiting for the other male to make his entrance. The hat he gave her was still in her possession, and she checked it to make sure it wasn’t ripped or anything, which it wasn’t. Kyle asked who was injured, and the orphan just glanced down at her injured arm, noticing the blood soaking through the pants.

      “’m hurt…”

She was going to say more, but the comment Beth made about them not being able to stay long due to the danger outside was enough to make her forget what she was going to say. Frowning, she glanced outside nervously, and wondered if they made a mistake running for the cabin instead of the marina. At long last, the last of their party finally made it through the door. He was injured and had clothing sticking out of his pockets and belt; items he had grabbed for them from what she caught due to his body language. Relief once again washed over her tiny frame and for a moment she had an inkling that everything was going to be alright. He asked if anyone was still bleeding badly, but she couldn’t open her mouth at all. Instead she watched him tending to his own injury hating that he was hurt trying to protect the lot of them. He tried to comfort them, stating that resting was most important for the time being and that he and Kyle would protect them, but… she wasn’t so sure if they could stop the horde that was rampaging outside. The adrenaline that had been pumping through her body was evaporating and agony due to her arm quickly made its presence known.

”Can you move your arm young miss?”

“…dun know. It hurts too much to do anything right now…”

Sniffing, Gabrielle turned to watch Beth putting boards up over the windows to make it so nothing could see in. Did the machines have eyes? Could they somehow see into buildings? Something was letting them know where humans were, because they were almost dead on anytime they were attacking on the beach. Frowning at the thought, she kept from poking at her injured arm and instead removed the gi pants, placing them in a pile nearby. Her arm was throbbing, and she had to fight to keep from crying or making any real noise.

“Yeah… thanks for distracting those machines mister and thanks for protecting us Kyle.”

"I hate to be a downer but I was just wondering 'bout something," Beth said as she sat on a counter and looked at the others.

"How's moving at night going to make a difference? I mean...machines don't have light sensitive eyes do they?" She put her arms up, "Don't get me wrong, I want to get out of here as much as the next person but..."

Her eyes traveled to Gabby. The poor little girl had already lost her parents and gotten mauled by a fake dog.

"We need a damn good plan first."

      Re: Death By Machines

Kyle looked to Beth, taking in her point. All he could think of was the assumption that like with humans, it would be less likely that they could accurately pick them up in the darkness. It could, however, be completely and totally wrong and mean nothing to the machines.

"Well we have no idea if darkness will impact their 'sight', so it is just a guess... I'm not sure if it is a good plan, but we can't exactly stay here forever... Nightfall is as good a time as any I guess... if only to give us a psychological sense of security, even if it is a false one..."

He didn't care how him using big words made him sound, he was racking his brain trying to come up with something and was coming up goose eggs. Nothing that sprang to mind seemed adequate enough for their purposes, and their main purpose was to survive. His best idea was the island he trains on, mostly surrounded by jagged rocks that only he knew how to navigate. It was isolated and had plenty of food, two months worth to be exact. No refrigeration unit, just a simple icebox and salt and a fire pit for cooking. Simple and outdoorsy, just the way Kyle liked it.

      ][ @MidRamble Come back soooooooooooon! T_T][

Gabrielle let her legs flop back and forth as she listened to Beth’s questioning the decision to move at night. The girl had a point, and Gabrielle found herself glancing towards the boarded up window almost as if expecting a crazy machine to break down the wall. When nothing occurred, she relaxed a little, her attention returning to her injured arm. Yeah, they definitely needed a good plan that was for sure. Sitting around and waiting wasn’t going to do them any good and would only cause them to become crazy with the anticipation of whether or not they’re going to make it.

The machines outside were rampaging like it was their birthdays and anyone left on the beach found it nearly impossible to escape. They couldn’t venture into the water because of the ski jets and the boats, and the beach wasn’t safe because of all of the other machines roaming around. In the parking lot, the cars were circling the entrance in and out of the beach, waiting for human contact. The scene was the same throughout the city and the lack of humans were making the machines very angry. They were hungry and homicidial.

Kyle added in his own two cents about why the group should move at night, and Gabby couldn’t decide if he was right or just making something up to try and make them relax a little. Sighing softly, she flinched a little as a rev of an engine neared the cabin, but when nothing further occurred, she relaxed once again. Her fingers nervously twisted a strand of her hair and she tried to keep from crying anymore. Her stomach growled softly, and blinking, she realized it had been hours since she last eaten. There wasn’t anything to eat in the cabin that she could tell, and it wasn’t worth going out into the mayhem, so the child kept quiet about her hunger.

“I guess nighttime is as good as anytime. We probably won’t make it here through the next day anyways...”

All at once any machine that had the capability of honking sounded their horns and revved their engines. Gabrielle ducked down beneath the table, hugging her knees to her chest at the sound. Her entire body was shaking uncontrollably, and as the machines continued to honk their horns for a solid five minutes, she made a beeline for the bathroom, throwing up in the toilet thanks to her nerves. The machines obviously wanted something, but what that thing was, was known only to them at least for the moment.

      “…I want my mommy…”

      Re: Death By Machines

      {OOC: This'll be a place holder post. I hadn't responded yet because the internet in our barracks has been out for about 3 weeks now. I can only post from work so I've been doing quick posts in RB. I'll type mine up in word today to make it less suspicious and put it up around 6pm Afghanistan time. so in about 4 and a half hours . Again sorry for the wait.}

The tension in the room was becoming palpable. Grant took a bandage, cloth, and some water out of the kit and began cleaning little Gabby’s arm. It was beginning to swell and was going to need an antiseptic which he knew was going to be painful. He listened intently as the other two started coming up with the next part of our plan. His mind drifted into thoughts of why the vehicles used their engines when other objects could move without anything driving their actions. His attention was snatched back to the current scene with the tone of Gabby’s grim words.

‘We probably won’t make it here through the next day anyways…’

The world then burst back alive with the thunderous roar of hundreds of vehicles honking, revving, and flashing their lights in demanding unison. At that threat Gabby went running for the bathroom.

“We shouldn’t move at night.” He said with a sternly serious face.

“Not if we don’t have to. They don’t need eyes to see and not being able to see what we could run over or what might be wantin to run over us is a mighty high price to pay for false security.”

He discretely peeped out of a crack in the window boarding and peered over the restless army of machines.

“If we can make it through the night, I’ve got a feeling we won hafta worry about the larger gas power machines anymore. Although the smaller machines can move without engines, probably cause of their weight, the larger machines seem to need gas to power their large bodies and that includes the boats out there.”

He again sat down by the first aid kit and took the flare gun out of the box. He paused and chuckled for a moment as he realized the little devil was desperately trying to fire its empty chamber. With the smallest hint of mercy he grabbed the hammer of the flailing weapon and used a string to tie it back and then placed it in one of his pockets. Grabbing the flare rounds one by one he started disassembling them and pouring their ballistic components into an empty box. Taking another long strand of cloth he poured his bourbon on one half of the strand, separating it to form a makeshift fuse, and used the other half to seal the box.

“When the big machines run out of energy we can make a run for the docks and head for your island. Course I do think we’ll still hafta worry about the smaller devils and anything that runs on electricity. By the same token, with that loud honkin that’s goin on out there, I think we aren’t the only ones aware of their fuel problems. They may need us for refuelin and that may give us some leverage.”

He gave a slight smirk as he set the special early Christmas present in his back belt line.

“Till then get some rest. We’re gonna need a lot of energy for runnin.”

His comedic smile morphed into its concerned mirrored form as his gaze shifted first to the bathroom door and then to the brave young woman that was gracing their presence.

“Would you mind checkin in on little Gabrielle in there. I don’t wanna barge in there when she’s already been through so much today and you seem like a very compassionate person. That and I’d bet your pretty face would be quite a bit more calmin than this mug-o-mine”

      Re: Death By Machines

Beth was concerned. Mostly about the little girls deep words. Sure, they might not make it but wasn't it human nature to try their damnedest? Grant broke her thoughts as Gabby ran into the bathroom and emptied the contents of her stomach. Grant was right, and she was thinking the same things.

"We'd really just have to wait out battery life for some things unless they're solar powered." She pushed back her hair as Grant asked her to check on Gabby and complimented her once more. It was hard to hide a blush as she made her way to the little bathroom. Entering slowly she closed the door behind her and looked down at the child before swooping down and placing a hand on her back in true maternal fashion.

"Don't worry...we're going to survive this. I promise."

      Re: Death By Machines

Kyle had been looking around every inch on the cabin, looking for food to eat. His search was semi successful, finding some food but nothing extravagant. There was a box of several protein bars, a box with three muffins, one and a half donuts, a granola bar, and eight bottles of water. His search also led him to find a folding knife, a beach hat, some towels, and a box of matches. He carried all of his findings to a table near the med kit, clipping the knife onto the belt on his shorts. He sorted out the food, taking two bottles of water to the ladies in the bathroom. He knocked on the door, smiling when Beth opened the door.

"Found some semblance of food, and eight of these... well now six... Here, ladies get first dibs..."

He handed Beth the bottles, he shifted his eyes to the table, doing a quick survey of their food stores. It would last them through the night, barely but it would. They would need their strength, especially if they were going to make a run for it in the morning. Kyle pulled out the knife and the hatchet, checking the sharpness of his weapons. He patted Beth on the shoulder, walking back to one of the windows. He looked out a small crack, seeing several machines wandering around the cabin in circles. It was like they were searching for something, most likely them.

"So, we leave in the morning, the best bet would be to dig a tunnel a bit of the way. They are focusing their search around the buildings, but if we could dig a few meters away toward the docks we could get a head start or something."

      Re: Death By Machines

Her stomach emptied itself of whatever food she ate that morning, which wasn’t that much. Once the food was emptied out, she was left with nothing but dry heaving, which was absolutely agonizing. Groaning between dry heaving, Gabby vaguely heard the honking, but forced herself to ignore it to keep her from becoming more upset than she was already. Reaching up to flush the toilet, she closed her eyes tightly, fighting to keep from freaking out and drawing attention to the group. Hearing the door opening, she shifted her attention towards it. Relaxing once she saw Beth walking in and closing the door, Gabby couldn’t help but shrug at the older girl’s comment about them surviving. How could she promise something like that?

“…you dun know that, Beth. Something worse could be coming.”

Her mind drifted as she imagined a huge robot stomping through the world, crushing anything or anyone that stood in its way. Shuddering a little, she slid to her feet and ran some water in the sink. Washing her face in the water and rinsing out her mouth, she spit it out and shut off the water, turning to glance up at Beth. A knock on the door interrupted whatever thought she had, and peeking up as it opened, she noticed Kyle with two bottles of water. Taking one of the bottles, she smiled gratefully.

      “Thanks… I’m okay now…”

Walking out of the bathroom, she slid back into her chair, peeking at the first aid stuff. Twisting off the lid, she took a few sips, feeling a lot better. She still didn’t feel comfortable with the machines on the other side of the thin walls, but at least they weren’t crashing down the walls. Laying her head down against the wall, Gabrielle attempted to ignore her painful injury and instead listened to the whirling sound of machines outside. She still had that deep feeling down inside that something bad was still coming, but worrying about it wouldn’t do her any good. That bridge would be crossed once they came to it, she supposed.

“What if they attack while we sleep…?”

"Though it's been a while now... I can still feel so much pain. Like the knife that cuts you… The wound heals, but the scar, that scar remains."
