Re: ivan has a journal now

      onbooks

The Fall is definitely my favorite by him, but i've also read The Plague, The Stranger, and his essay on the myth of Sisyphus; that essay is probably my second favorite of his, as I feel it clearly explains his philosophy, which is something you don't get much from philosophers.

I've only read one Murakami, and that's Kafka on the Shore, mostly because of all the other shit I've seen referencing it. It was pretty ok, and I generally like the dreamscape reality idea, but the whole "it means what you think it means!" explanation always irks me a little. Like, if the shit's just a bunch of crazy thrown-together almost-meaningful shit meant to draw on emotions rather than portray a specific logical premise, just come out and say so, ya nudnik. I wanna read more of his stuff, though. Norwegian Wood is next on my list, because I'd like to read something on the other side of his spectrum, and I don't necessarily dislike modern romance. Do you have any recommendations, though? I've also heard good things about The Wind Up Bird Chronicles and IQ84.

I didn't like The Great Gatsby back when I read it, but that's probably because it was a high school English class book and we read it hella slow and the teacher really beat us over the head with the symbolism. Now that I've forgotten most of the class, I need to tackle it again, because it sounds like something I'd really like. Same with Brave New World, though I didn't really like 1984 as much the second time around.

HP Lovecraft I tried to get into, but I just kept falling asleep during At the Mountains of Madness. I can only handle a guy telling me to be afraid for so long. At some point, I should probably actually be afraid of something. I hear the later stuff is a lot jazzier, but I think Haiyore! Nyaruko-chan killed any ability I had left of appreciating that mythos.

Chaucer I like. Faulkner I still need to get into, same with the big Russians, minus Dostoyevsky, since I have a copy of The Brothers Karamazov that I flip through sometimes (I'm in it, after all).

I'll toss Danielewski on my list, though, and I suppose it couldn't hurt to read some Cummings, though I admit my eye for poetry is pretty dull these days for lack of practice.

Myth of Sisyphus is AMERZING. The Stranger was the first book I had ever read by him and I seriously adored it. And yeah, it really is well articulated (the essay). It's what got my foot into the door for reading/researching philosophy.

The Wind Up Bird Chronicles would be a good one to move on to next, yeah. (:
But don't you think coming out and saying so (about the pulling more an emotional premise) would defeat the purpose of writing that way?
That's one of the reasons I like his style so much.

REREAD The Great Gatsby. First time I read it i was okay with it but then it's something I fell in love with the 2nd time around. It probably was cause you were in high school when you read it. That's happened to me a few times.

Yeah, try reading The Call of the Cthulhu! That's a really good starting point for him.

I did a 16 page paper on Crime and Punishment. It was a nightmare but so cool at the same time. It was a nihilistic paper. Try reading Leo Tolstoy or Ivan Turgenev!
Tolstoy's Anna Karenina is being turned into a move this year, comes out this October. I'm kind of worried about it.
