General Discussion Rules and Advice (revised 10-3)

      General Discussion Rules

In General Discussion, we welcome casual discussion and serious debates. Here you may make threads for any form of topic (science, politics, breaking news, life, etc) as long as they encourage ideas and promote discussion. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to PM a General Discussion staff member. Thank you.
1.) AL 10 board wide rules are always in effect.

2.) Respect : General Discussion in your opinions are on public display and will be treated as such. If having your opinions, beliefs, or ideals questioned is not something you can tolerate you should not be posting them. One of the most important rules in General Discussion is displaying respect for the thread topics, and your other members at all times. GD staff wants to add that this does not mean you can’t discuss or challenge a poster’s opinion or stance on an issue; in fact you should do this. Personal insults or simply calling a member wrong are not now nor will they ever be tolerated.

To reiterate if having your opinions and beliefs challenged, sometimes heatedly, offends you DO NOT POST THEM!

3.) Spam: If at any time you spam a topic, it will be removed and you will be asked to stay on topic.

4.) No Double Posting : If you wish to add something to a recent post, please make good use of your "edit post" button. Double posting is not allowed and you will be warned for it.

5.) Flow Rule: GD allows for all ranges of discussion depending on the initial post of the topic creator please follow the flow of the opening post and topic, if the opening post is casual keep your post more casual and if the opening post is detailed and serious please follow suit with your own post. If you'd like to make a more detailed discussion of what is already a casual discussion please create a new topic on the issue.

If at any time you wish to discuss a discrepancy, or have a comment or concern about a General Discussion moderator, please PM the General Discussion Hmod, if your issue is with the decision of the GD Hmod than contact a member of the Admin team.

Re: General Discussion Rules and Advice (revised 10-3)

Is it alright to have a set post about a religion or is that not aloud I did not read anything against it but im making sure. I would like to make a post only for like wiccan's and pagans so they have a place to vent or just talk about they learning's and other things that may be needed for that religion.

Need advice -- justice or revenge?

Hey all; I don't normally post here, but I have a quandary that I'd like to get some professional input on. And what's more professional than the Internet, right?

Now, to the srys bsns. I worked for a company (that I shall not name) for roughly two years prior to my current job (with a completely different company). I left my former job over issues unrelated to the subject of this post; however, while I was there I became aware of a very serious health hazard at the work site -- namely, water damage from a leak was causing black mold to grow in a corner near where I was working. This was around July / August this year, with the relevant photos (below) taken in September. My coworkers and I brought it to management's attention and yet the issue was ignored until October, whereupon the mold was promptly painted over. For clarification's sake, here's the wikipedia article on black mold and the related one on removing mold growths; contrary to what management claimed, "mold-killing paint" is not on the list and probably doesn't even exist.

As I said, I no longer work for the company... but everyone that I've mentioned this to since then has said I should report it to OSHA and send them a copy of the photos. The images are below; I just want to get some extra opinions and find out if there's any way I can get in trouble for having taken photos (on my cell phone) at the job site. I'm also worried about this looking like a case of "revenge" against a former employer that I didn't part ways with on happy terms (a rather negative yearly review was a big part of why I left). Any related input would be appreciated. Thanks all.

LOL. Mold-killing paint. That is fucking awesome.

Anyway, unless there was some kind of contract that you signed that included some sort of clause that prohibited taking photos or whatever, I doubt there's much to worry about on that note. And I am all about revenge. This doesn't strike me as being particularly vengeful though. Companies need to be held accountable for their nonsense. Shit slips under the radar far too often because people aren't willing to report it for whatever reason.

You know, funny thing about asking for advice in here is that we have an advice thread as literally the very first thread on the list. Maybe you should go ask in there.

Report it if you want, or don't. I wouldn't go through the hassle because you don't work there anymore and it may just be more work you have to do for no gain, but it's your evidence, your beef, your call.

It would be spiteful to report them if you hadn't given them a chance to fix the problem, but since they had a chance and they chose to not do the right thing it is very justifiable to report them in good conscious. A business works for profit and you shouldn't take it personally, you need to report them, especially if the black mold could be affecting the workers.

Sorry about the mixup Yami -- I didn't realize there was an advice thread, but in hindsight I'm not sure how I missed it. Thanks for the merge.

      Need advice on blogging.

I've always wanted to start my own blog.

I'm very much into having the freedom to customize things.

      I love to write.

Are there any good blogger sites out there?

How should one go about starting a blog?

The two most popular to use blogging sites are Wordpress and Google.
Google is far more user friendly, but if you know a bit of html or basic coding WordPress is fairly easy to use.
If you ever decide to migrate between host sites, then Google has made it extremely easy to convert to their software. Wordpress not so much.
I myself and some other bloggers have intentionally made the choice to use google's blogger service but started the blog on wordpress simply because of the domain name thing. I realized recently that this is stupid because if you have a large enough audience most of your audience will be familiar with any number of google's services and probably won't care about the '.blogspot' thing.

Starting a blog is relatively easy. I'm not sure if you mean how to design and launch a blog or how to create a successful blog. If you mean the latter you'd probably want to look at sites like quantcast, google analytics, and some other sites that can help you track your demographics from day one. And then in the beginning you'll want to use what you know about your demographic to reach out to as many of those people as possible. Once you have 'fan base' of whatever size you think is 'good enough' or substantial then you'll want to curtail your blog around their likes.
And then there's a bunch of other stuff that goes into being a successful blogger nowadays since it's changed a lot over the past thirteen years. I remember when Yahoo's geocities was an awesome thing for some bloggers. (it wasn't necessarily easy to use but i found it a relatively easy service that allowed you to get your site/blog indexed by search engine's right away)

Thanks Raine. I'll go do some research on wordpress v.s google and see which one I will like more. Really I just want to have a fan base big enough to maintain a worthy blog. If it ends up flourishing, great. If not, that's fine too. I'm not expecting anything. I guess, I'm just going to write and see where it takes me. I definitely like to customize a lot. Customizing is probably one of the biggest things with me because I like to make it mine... original.
