Traditional or Digital?

Technology has moved on in leaps and bounds since most of us were children and for some, like me, we didn’t have computers or mobile/cell phones or...

Technology has moved on in leaps and bounds since most of us were children and for some, like me, we didn’t have computers or mobile/cell phones or fancy gadgets growing up. Kindles and iPads were mere twinkles in Steve Jobs’ daddy’s eyes (well, maybe not since he would have been born by then but shush, semantics :P). We had absolutely no choice but to use paper books, since even computers were pretty rare.

Nowadays, of course, these technological inventions are evolving constantly and becoming more and more accessible. As the market changes and new inventions challenge the old ones prices are being driven down by competition so that now you can pick up a Kindle relatively cheaply. Not to mention the free e-reading apps that everybody and their dog are releasing lately.

For someone like me, who devours books at an unhealthy rate, the accessibility of e-books is a welcome relief. I’ve never enjoyed shopping, preferring to be somewhat of a hermit, and when I do go out it’s always tough to decide which book to take with me. These days I can just pick up my Kindle and head off, no worrying about finishing the book and being left without any reading material. The price is also a huge attraction as the majority of e-books are cheaper than their printed counterparts if not free and without e-books I would never be able to feed my habit half as much as I do. Then, of course, there is space – I recently gave away over a hundred books in order to move abroad and replaced many of them on my Kindle. The majority of the rest remain in storage because I simply do not have room in my tiny townhouse to display them. I think it’s clear I’m a Kindle fan. And I haven’t even touched on the potential environmental benefits to using an e-reader yet, but I will later.

That said, there really is no substitute for a physical book. The feel and smell of the paper is irreplaceable. With an e-reader you can’t flick back and forth through the book as easily and when you’re like me and often forget details that are referenced again later this is something I do a lot. Curling up to click a button just isn’t the same as curling up to turn pages, and unless you’re reading on an iPad or Kindle Fire (which are not as good for your eyes as the classic Kindle) you don’t get colour pictures –sometimes you don’t get pictures at all. And you can’t tear the corners of a Kindle page and eat them while you’re reading, but that might just be 12 year old me >.>;;

For me, the benefits outweigh the negatives. I do still buy a lot of physical books (which occupy my single bookshelf) but mostly things that aren’t available on Kindle. I’ve read dozens of classics since I got my Kindle because they’re free – something that just isn’t viable with physical books because there’s the printing costs to cover. I’m a total convert and have done a complete 180 from how I felt when I first saw the “new” Kindle. I hated the idea of reading on a machine and was very much a book purist until I actually used a Kindle (my friend has one and let me play with it) and then I realised how it would benefit me. Especially as I can go on holiday and read upwards of five books while I’m there, which takes up a lot of weight in my luggage!

Then there are the environmental arguments. I’ve seen some say that e-readers are better for the environment because they require cutting down fewer trees and I understand the process of making paper is quite a long and is somewhat detrimental to the environment. The runoff of chemicals from paper plants alone apparently causes or has caused a number of issues, though I suspect that has been resolved since I learned about it. On the other hand, these electronic devices have to be powered somehow and that ‘somehow’ is almost always fossil fuels of some sort. The servers that are used to host the shopping sites where we get our e-books are certainly powered by environment harming fuels so there is also an argument that e-books aren’t as eco-friendly as some people would like you to believe.

I think that e-books are the future. Some day we’ll simply stop producing books on paper, or at least the majority of them, but I don’t think that’ll be within my lifetime. I wouldn’t be surprised if datapads a la Star Trek or Andromeda eventually become commonplace in society. I hope they’ll continue to make literature available in a printed format of some sort, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that becomes the exception rather than the norm.

I’m really interested to hear what you all have to say about this. Obviously this is a topic I know lots of people feel very strongly about so please try to be respectful!

Do you prefer e-readers or books? Why?

Would you be willing to convert to e-readers if the environmental impact was significant?

How would you feel if society changed to a predominantly electronic method of reading?

I look forward to your thoughts and remember: there are no wrong opinions! :D

Quote:

 The adoptive parents of a child born with male and female organs say South Carolina mutilated their son by choosing a gender and having his male genitalia surgically removed.

The surgery took place when the child was 16 months old and a ward of the state, according to a lawsuit filed by the parents against three doctors and several members of the South Carolina Department of Social Services.

The child's biological mother was deemed unfit, and the biological father had apparently abandoned him, according to the suit. So others made the decision.

The child, now 8 years old, feels more like a boy and "wants to be a normal boy," said Pamela Crawford, the boy's adoptive mother.

"It's become more and more difficult, just as his identity has become more clearly male, the idea that mutilation was done to him had become more and more real," she said in a video released by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is assisting in the case.

"There was no medical reason that this decision had to be made at this time."

Marilyn Matheus, a spokeswoman for the South Carolina Department of Social Services, said the agency does not have any comment on the pending litigation.

The defendants named in the suit also include doctors from Medical University of South Carolina and Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Sandy Dees, a spokeswoman for the Greenville Health System, said she could not comment because of the litigation.

Assigned to be a girl, but identifying as a boy

The child, identified in the lawsuit as "M.C.," refuses to be called a girl and lives as a boy. His family, friends, school, religious leaders and pediatrician support his identity.

"We just let him follow his instincts as much as we can," his adoptive father, John Mark Crawford, said in the video.

Pamela Crawford said performing gender assignment surgery on a baby robbed her child of the ability to make the decision for himself.

"I would have never made the decision to choose the gender either way," she said. "What I would have been working with is how do we preserve as much functioning in either direction because we can't know what this child's gender identity is going to be."

The lawsuit claims doctors at a state hospital and Department of Social Services workers "decided to remove M.C.'s healthy genital tissue and radically restructure his reproductive organs in order to make his body appear to be female."

The suit says the surgery violated the 14th Amendment, which says that no state shall "deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law."

The suit also asks for "compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial."

But the adoptive father said the real intent of the lawsuit "is just to uphold these constitutional principles -- integrity of a person's body, and some kind of due process for infants where people around them in power are considering doing surgeries like this."

Pamela Crawford agreed.

"I would give anything for this to not have been done to our child," she said. "I don't want it to happen to any more kids."

Do you think the state or the adoptive parents are right in their actions?

Was the state at all justified?

Yesterday (May 20th), the National Weather Center ( www.noaa.gov (http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/yesterday.html) ) has confirmed 27 tornadoes...

Yesterday (May 20th), the National Weather Center ( www.noaa.gov ) has confirmed 27 tornadoes alone, with the hardest hit area being that of Moore, Oklahoma. The day before, May 19th, storms tore through the same area dropping 31 confirmed tornadoes with the hardest hit area being Shawnee, Oklahoma (about 30-40 miles NE of Moore).

Here's the facts on the Moore tornado so far:

Perviously ranked as an EF-4, damage assessment shows this tornado is now considered to be an EF-5. Tornadoes are ranked according to destruction, not always size and wind velocity. This tornado was big enough, but by Oklahoma standards it was pretty average, with winds at around 200-210mph (EF-5's usually have 300+ wind velocity) however, because the storm was slow moving, the tornado did not pass quickly, allowing more damage to be taken as it lingered over areas thus classing it as an EF-5 monstrous tornado.

It was about 3/4's of a mile wide but cut a destruction and debris path about 4 miles wide.

It was on the ground about 20-25 miles.

Previous death counts were thought to be in the 90's but as of this evening the official report says only 24 deaths have been confirmed. Of that 24, 9 were children, 7 of which were killed inside their elementary school.

Moore is a suburb on the edge of Oklahoma City. Its primarily a residential area (especially where the tornado hit) of middle class families. It also went through the school district which has at least 5 schools for all ages within a miles radius of one another where the storm plowed through. The hardest hit (flattened) schools were Briarwood Elementray and Plaza Towers Elementary; grades K-5.

Earth.

We've never really been good to it. It's sort of just been our playground. We raped the soil for our benefit, defiled the life-sustaining waters, and gave a big screw you to the atmosphere. Even in third world countries, this truth was unavoidable. Sure, there were some that made promises and even efforts to preserve the planet for our future offspring. Not enough gave a damn though.

Funny thing about Earth. She's a cruel mother. One who decided maybe another restart was in order. You know, send everyone the way of the dinosaurs.

You might remember the date, the time even, that moment you realized not only was the human race royally screwed but also every other species. It was June 21st, 2015. 3:10 UTC for those of you keeping track. That was the moment all of Mother Nature unleashed her terror. Strange weather systems were already hanging about but they kicked into action nearly all at once. Tornadoes of epic sizes tore through cities with no warning, tsunamis crashed upon the shores, hail burst through building materials. The earth itself was in an uproar with earth quakes that no chart could contain and once dormant volcanoes spewing magma and ash to cover all around them. Even the temperatures stopped making sense.

All in all, you can imagine the scene. It was the same everywhere. Astronauts did not even return to the planet, instead making suicide pacts as everything was read as being desolated.

Shame too.

The thing about Earth and her fleshy friends always make a comeback (ask the roaches and crocodiles). Somehow, a sliver of humanity managed to survive. Buried under buildings, hidden in cellars, tossed upon the ocean, a slice of the world's population...only 2% managed to crawl from the ashes and give the skies finger (or whatever gesture they found appropriate) and get on with living.

These weren't even the people who had trained for survival. Just normal joes and lucky bastards really. People all over the world, scattered about, now forced to move on even though everything they know about the world is gone. May as well be stranded on an alien planet. Some animals survived, bugs, lizards, sea creatures that were forced to the surface from boiling seas...plant life held on as it usually does.

Some people have found each other, some forming groups. There are over-zealous religious folk, insisting they are the Chosen Ones. There's many focused on repopluation (whether you like it or not buddy). Some even already have resorted to crime, brutality, slavery. Hell, the world basically sucks. People are crazy. You have to be to survive.
~~~
For the sake of getting started, I'm setting the starting point as an area on the East Coast of the area formerly known as Virginia, USA (3 years since the happening). It's rumored that there is a sort of hashed out village there of survivors, The Chosen Ones. You can describe how you arrived in the area and go from that point.
I ask that character resemble what used to be normal people. If you have picked up skills since the happening that's fine just don't go overboard. In regards to age, please realize this is set 3 years since the happening so it is unlikely that small children and the elderly have survived though not impossible. The more affected you are by the events the better, let's keep it interesting.
~~~

It was three years to the day by the calculations of the others. She'd personally lost track of time though was often reminded of it by those around her. It was not unusual for others to go about as though the years no longer mattered. Some even resorted to the moon patterns like past generations had. That was cool with her, going by the moon. You could tell when it was waxing and waning. Guess at the seasons though they hadn't really settled back into a routine just yet.

She'd only just joined these people in hopes of stability, still not having given in to their beliefs. Uber-christians, she called them. Saved by the grace of God and Baby Jesus or the coming or something. Her family was atheist. So was she. It was hard to get on board. Painful to listen to really. The leaders here looked like pictures of the Apostles she recalled. Bearded, dirty men in robes.

They all looked like bible characters or steampunk wannabes, she observed before looking at a reflection of herself in the nearby pond. Her dirty blonde hair had gotten long and was pulled into a bun in the middle back of her head though strays flapped around her ears and brow. Her face looked older than she recalled, womanly and battered. She was tired, slightly dirty, but pretty with even features and keen blue eyes. She missed makeup, liner especially, though occasionally ash was smeared under her eyes like a football player for practical purposes. It was close.

Her clothes at this point were a mix of handmade and scavenged. Her pants were the same she wore that day, heavy grey jeggings that were a little loose around the ankle. Her top was a discarded bit of black cotton joined by bits of leather in a corset fashion at her abdomen. She'd managed to create shoes not so much unlike her Toms. One of those silly (well she used to think they were) survival bracelets adorned her wrist.

She looked back toward the center of the makeshift community from her place on the rotten log she sat on. One of the leaders was preaching. Praise to the lord would go up here and there as he talked about the rebirth of the human race and pointed out that many of the women had succeeded in bearing the fruit. They were the vessels. She made a face. This group had not been forceful with outsiders, knowing they could lure them in all too easy so she'd been lucky.

Lindy McCormick was ok with that. She'd move on when she could, since just listening and nodding kept her in good graces for now. There'd been far worse on her travels here from Columbus. In all aspects, she was lucky to be alive. And that wasn't counting her time spent in the rubble of her school. She was a sophomore then, attending a graduation ceremony. Now she was eighteen years old, had no friends to speak of, and unwilling to become a vessel.

She was fairly sure the world wasn't done fucking with them yet.

After watching the new xbox one reveal event i feel i am one of the only pepole happy with the console and the direction it is going in it would seem to me that people are rather upset over a few things such as the same old games argument ( call of duty and fifa being the main 2 ) and backwards compatibility
This honestly worries me when it comes to the community i love and have been a part of from the NES days and onward it wold appear that people have not been expecting this!?
After all was the xbox and the 360 not a slow movement into a more home entertainment based box? I don see how people have not seen this coming when the evolution has been in front of there eyes all this time
Console gaming has changed to a more casual market of family's and gamers who enjoy a great media experience and the more casual game mainly being the FPS and sports titles
Have people forgotten that the hardcore gaming platform has never been the console? it has always been the PC ..... right!!??
When i first started to really get into gaming i remember my dad had brought home this huge CRT monitor and tower and i played doom and quake for hours on end before discovering online game play on the only 56k dial up ( hey remember those days of waiting hours to connect and game play terribly laggy but still captured the imagination when graphics where not an issue it was all about who had the better stats and finding the little hidden Easter eggs ? )
I spent many hours of my youth on a pc playing MOH and other great pc titles
the point i am getting at is gaming has always and will always be about the PC
xbox one ps4 and wii u face it there consoles and there doing what the console has evolved to do be a casual yet fun entertainment and games center that you can simply pick up and play
And just as a final point i have always been a strong believer that if you want to play retro play it properly play the games on the console they where built for get some friends over some good food and a good beer and catch up on the great memory that console gave you

Hey

So, this was announced recently and I wanted to get some opinions on it.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...abric-can.html

Are you for it, against it? I personally think that although it would be easier to just put a t shirt on, you could get some really cool designs with this and of course the sizing is unique to the person who it was sprayed onto. It's certainly interesting though I'm not sure it will catch on as a replacement to conventional t shirts.

What do you guys think?

(If anyone can't see the link let me know, I'll try to dig out a better one or find the video on YouTube)
