spam (sp m) KEY

NOUN:
Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail.
TRANSITIVE VERB:
spammed , spam•ming , spams
1. To send unsolicited e-mail to.
2. To send (a message) indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups.
ETYMOLOGY:
From Spam ( probably inspired by a comedy routine on the British television series Monty Python's Flying Circus, in which the word is repeated incessantly)

Spam (sp m) KEY
A trademark used for a canned meat product consisting primarily of chopped pork pressed into a loaf.

Both can be equally destructive but only one is edible, unless of course you print out the pages and eat them, which I suppose can be destructive as well. What is the point of spam? According to a topic I’ve made in a non-AL-affiliated site, spam’s purpose is…

Quote:
Why, the better to keep you busy with, my dear.

:D

Advertisement; it's just like banners on web pages.

Getting your ad out to the customer is incredibly important these days; it used to be fine with just billboards, commercials and ads in literary items [Newspapers, magazines, etc.], but now the field has expanded in possibility to rake in a larger target group.

People spam because they want attention! Also so that they have something to do. And some just want to get a point across to someone or a group of people. That’s What I feel, at least. <_<

Spam.. a mass of ads delivered to everyone! It is a source of getting a message out to sell something. Possibly the only way you will ever see what they're trying to sell. Really annoying.

Then people who want to make your life horrible send you links that will spam you to death. Yes.

Delicious meat in a can. :)

mmmm MORE SPAM!

Spam -

Phishing, you reply or even so much as open it, you're opened a can of worms (not just the kind that can jack your computer, either) so that people can also steal and use your IP address and keep Law Enforcement and Government Enforcement agencies off their own butts and screw you over.

Among other things to steal your identity and use it to clean your bank account and such.

Spam outside that purpose is to annoy the heck out of you, let alone try and find over-protective people who will go wear a blind fold, tape their mouth shut, put ear plugs in their ears and go hide in a cave because their anonymity is gone, or believe their in box is infected by a virus hell-bent on trying to destroy their computer.

Targeting more towards the e-mail spam, those quoted above have some good points. What kind of world would we live in without spam? BORING of course!!!

Much like the canned meat, spam seems to occur when you least expect it and remain around forever. I’m sure the practice of spam began long ago, probably with the introduction of the internet, but I’ve never understood its purpose. Well, I take that back I enjoy the silly type of spam, which for a while could be read in the roleplayers realm section. It didn’t hurt anyone and most everyone that read it, got a giggle out of it. Those that didn’t probably have something shoved up their ass and couldn’t get a joke even if it slapped them across the face.

When is spam a bad spam?

LIEK OMG! I’M POSTING HERE ‘CAUSE I WANNA! HAHAHA N00BS!! B00BS!!!!! OH NOES!!!!! WUT?! THIS TOPIC IS ‘BOUT WAYZ 2 FIGHT T3H BAD GUYZ? WELL, I LI3K PI3!!

Yeah, I’m sure you all get the hint. Posting stupid crap in the middle of a serious topic is a major no-no. It not only pisses off the author, but all others that are attempting to attribute to the discussion. Of course there are different levels of spam. There’s the total off the wall type of spam where a poster decides just to post something random in a random topic. Another type of spam is where the poster is sort of kinda responding to the topic, but not really. Third type of spammy goodness results from the replier adding in his/her two cents, but then responding again to the topic just because they can’t get enough of a good/bad thing. Yet another type is … well, I can’t think of another type. My point is, there’s a time for spam; believe it or not and a then there’s a time for no spam.

I personally don’t see a problem with the few topics that have bloomed up in the roleplayers section that contain nothing but spam. Making everyone remain serious and on topic will eventually become a toll and make everything boring and dull. HAH! TOLL AND DULL!

You find them everywhere, no matter how old you are. They’re at school, at work, at the PTA meetings, at the conference, even on Animeleague! They’re inescapable. You don’t have to be the creme de la creme to be in one. In fact, some people don’t even know they’re part of such a thing. I’m talking about cliques, otherwise known as that annoyingly close-knit group of people that have all those fucking inside jokes that no one gets or cares about.

Now, don’t you dare turn around and say ‘We don’t have those on AL! We left them back in highschool! We’re not kids! Well- Not most of us. We can’t have those here!’.

You’re a fucking liar.

They’re quite evident. Within three weeks of joining AL you can’t help but notice them. It’ll be those people in your favorite forum who always stick together and back each other, share the same basic viewpoints on everything, act all friendly, have quotes of each other in their signatures, etc. It’s those groups, those people you can pick out as easily you can the word SEX in this article. Sometimes those groups even sort of run the forum to the point where if you don’t find someone else to stick with soon, you leave, because you don’t feel like you belong.

Terrible, isn’t it? =/

I remember back when I was a little nooblet, coming onto AL and just sitting there like ‘Oh shit.’. I didn’t know anyone, and I didn’t quite know how to go about meeting anyone. All I had was this stupid generic spam email from some weirdo named ‘Mike’ asking me to come here. So, I took my nooby self through all the forums, looking around, then decided to actually follow the signs and stick around. So, I read the rule, made a topic in Welcomes, and waited. I got about three Welcomes, then I got bored and basically interjected in all of the other forums. Ramblings was too fast-paced and everyone ignored me, so I left. I said something in GD, got torn apart by Beserk Sushi and DNA, then left and never went back. I went to Creative Writing, posted a poem, and was ignored while everyone else got critiqued. Then I went to RR, posted a bio, got pushed into an initiation, and played. Everything from there on is basically irrelevant, because I never left the place. <3

Mind you though, RR isn’t without its own cliques. Hell, ours is probably the easiest to find out of all of them. Honestly, I got pwned by them all the time in my early days. I’m sure any new member who tries to make a specific forum their home has experienced something similar. You try and make your own niche and you get kicked all over the place, like it’s some sort of initiation before your presence can be taken as the norm. If you offend the popular members of the section though (and you’ll know who they are), the aggravation never ends. Then the AL/RR/CL awards come along and it’s just doubly proven who’s in that kingly clique and who isn’t (because as we all know, the awards aren’t really about who deserves them, it’s about voting for who you know and like that deserves them, and essentially a popularity contest).

Honestly, what these groups really do is alienate others, especially newcomers. Sure, they have a lot of fun and laughs within their own circle, but sometimes it’s at the expense of others, which is never fair. In the end, this just stops the flow of newcomers, leaving this circle as the sole inhabitants of the forum, and one of two things happen. Either some of the members become sickened of their old pals and the circle steadily decreases in size, or the forum itself becomes too depopulated and eventually dies. Sometimes it’s both. Either way, oddly enough, forming a social pyramid often leads to the eventual downfall of the society around it. Perhaps that’s something the leading members of the forums ought to remember next time they kick around some member with a younger join date then theirs, or a lower post count. They could be the next you, once you leave your circle in disgust. So rather then sitting there, treating them like shit, perhaps you should broaden your horizons and show them around, teach them about the dynamics of the community, and so forth. Stop acting like damn children and grow up, people. This isn’t some game of who’s better than whom, so please, don’t be a douche and make it one.
